Paediatric Osteopath

Osteopaths mainly focus on the diagnosis and treatment of problems within the musculoskeletal system (joints, muscles, ligaments, bones, tendons, fascia). They are trained work with the whole population, from babies and children to adults and the elderly. Some osteopaths however choose to undergo further specialisation in certain areas and populations.

Ellie specialises as a paediatric osteopath. After completing her initial Masters in Osteopathy, Ellie went on to complete a further year-long post-graduate certificate in Paediatric Osteopathy at the University College of Osteopathy in London. She regularly treats babies and children, as well as pre and post-natal women since undergoing the certificate; and often attends courses to further her knowledge in the paediatric field.

Similarly to with adults, children and babies can acquire musculoskeletal problems which osteopaths can help manage. Furthermore during pregnancy women undergo changes such as ligament laxity, weigh increase and postural adaptation that can lead to different pressures being put on the joints in the lower back; osteopathy can help with some of these changes.

What To Expect

During a consultation your osteopath may ask you questions about pregnancy, birth and the symptoms you or your child are experiencing. You may be asked to undress your child down to their nappy or underwear, therefore you may want to bring shorts and a t-shirt if your child would feel more comfortable. During the treatment your child may receive hands on treatment, self-management advice and exercises depending on the presenting symptoms and diagnosis. As babies’ skeletons are softer than adults the treatment will therefore be more gentle than with adult osteopathy.

While there is currently no research to suggest osteopathy is of any danger to pregnant women, we do ask that you inform us of your pregnancy regardless of the stage.
